This passive solar, timber, steel & glass house for a family of four is sited on a steep rock outcrop overlooking a terraced garden below, and views out to the southern Gulf Islands, Victoria and the Olympic range beyond.
Reflecting the steeply sloping rock face, floor plates terrace down through a series of levels both within the house and attached solarium at the lower level. This cascade of interior spaces, which can be opened wide to integrate interiors with the exterior over several levels, allow for multiple connections between house, solarium, south side ground level terraces and pool to the surrounding gardens.
The solarium will act as a solar chimney providing heat and stack ventilation to moderate indoor temperature swings throughout the year.
Flexibility is built into the plan providing children's sleeping quarters to be close to parent's now and then shifting the pattern to more private, separate quarters over time.
